Alberto Lysy

A violinist and music pedagog, Alberto Lysy was one of the most outstanding Argentine artists of the twentieth century. As a violinist, he performed with the most prestigious Philharmonic Orchestras in the world - in Amsterdam, London and New York, among others. Regarding education, he developed an important activity in promoting young musical talents to whom he transmitted his passion for music. He performed in theatres such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and the Victoria Hall in Geneva.

One of his most significant legacies was the fact that he founded the Camerata Bariloche, in 1966, with other musicians of his generation, which he conducted until 1971. Then he created the Camerata Lysy, the Festival delle Citta di Castello Nazioni and the International Festival at Castello di Pontino Sermonetta (Italy). In 1955, he was honoured at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, becoming the first Argentine artist to get this award. There he met Yehudi Menuhin, a member of the jury, together with David Oistrakh, Zino Francescatti and other great violinists. From that moment onwards, Menuhin was his teacher and mentor in the European music world, and years later, Lysy became the International Menuhin Music Academy director, in Gstaad (Switzerland). Since then and until his death on December 30th 2009, Alberto Lysy shone on the international concert scene.

Antonio Lysy’s words (cellist and son)

“A cruel illness took his life at too early an age - which is hard to imagine for a man who had such stamina and strength...”
